Key Details

Learn more about the splendid region of Si Kao with these travel tips, including details such as the weather, currency, transportation and activities of Si Kao by visiting the official site of Anantara Si Kao Thailand.

The landscape

Dive beneath crystal-clear waves to gaze at a shimmering world below. Trek through lush green jungle towards stunning waterfalls, hearing the calls of wildlife all around you. Relax on a silver sand beach with mysterious limestone cliffs clinging to the shoreline. In Si Kao, an unexpected diversity of landscapes waits to be discovered.

Comprising a total area of 4,941 square kilometres, the province of Trang is divided into ten districts, including the Amphur of Si Kao. As well as mountains, waterfalls, and forests, the province also boasts an archipelago in the Andaman Sea of over 46 islands, including the 21 islands that are part of Si Kao. Though its geography is similar to popular neighbouring provinces like Krabi and Phang Nga, Trang remains relatively untouched and pristine, due in large part to its abundance of national parks and wildlife sanctuaries that have preserved the area’s natural beauty for a new generation of visitors.

The locals

Reflecting the variety of influences in the province, the local population comes from a diverse background. The majority of people are descended from Chinese merchants who settled down in Trang from mainland China. After two or three generations, these Chinese immigrants became an integral part of local Thai culture. Although many Chinese-Thai families still practice traditional Chinese customs, they have also integrated the rituals and philosophies of the indigenous agricultural population, creating a new hybrid Trang culture in the process.

The weather

Bring your swimsuit and sunscreen, since Si Kao enjoys warm temperatures all year round, varying between 20° to 36° Celsius. Located on the same coastline as Phuket and Krabi Provinces, Trang Province is also part of the tropical monsoon climate, which produces three major seasons.

The best time to play in the sun is between December and May, the dry season. In April, the daily temperature is the highest of the year. The rainy season, which is from May to September, often includes short periods of rain during the daytime. After that, the monsoon generally comes from September to November, before drying up by December.

The Thai national currency is the Thai Baht. The exchange rate of the baht as of March 2010 is approximately 30 baht to the US dollar. Major currencies – such as the US Dollar, Euro, British Pound, Japanese Yen, the Chinese Renminbi, Australian Dollar, Singapore Dollar, Saudi Riyal and UAE Dirham – may be exchanged at Krabi International Airport and at major banks in Krabi and Trang. We do, however, have an ATM at the resort, which is connected to international networks for cash withdrawals from home accounts around the world.

While Trang is generally very safe, take smart precautions and stow your passport, excess cash and other valuables at the resort.

When swimming or boating, always check the advisories posted around the island and on the beach. The currents of the Andaman Sea from Krabi on down to Trang can sometimes cause dangerous swimming conditions. Do not enter the water if a red warning sign is posted.

Medical Services

Thailand boasts a very high international standard of healthcare throughout the country. At Si Kao, there is a health clinic within five minutes of the resort and hospitals in Trang and Krabi.

Arrival and Transportation

For many years, Trang and the surrounding areas were accessible only via land and sea. Now, with the opening of a domestic airport in Trang and the international airport in Krabi, just to the north, it is much easier to reach this undiscovered side of Thailand. Nok Air has daily flights to and from Bangkok and Trang. Krabi International Airport has multiple flights a day from Bangkok, as well as direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and certain destinations in Scandinavia.

In addition to flying, there are two overnight trains a day from Bangkok to Trang and vice versa, while there are multiple buses that leave throughout the day from Bangkok’s Southern Bus Terminal. Once you arrive in Trang, there are many taxis and local tuk-tuks (auto-rickshaws) at each station and the airport that can take you to your final destination. Furthermore, transportation can be arranged for travel between the Krabi airport and the Si Kao area.
